Contrarian Revamps the Button Down

Bored with the usual button-down white shirts? Contrarian has a few ideas to make them quite different. Take a look at this one:

Make a bold statement with this floor length train white button down. Worn here with mini shorts, I would style this with gold statement jewelry and strappy heels. You're sure to draw attention.

Long trains not really your style? Check out this interpretation:

Cut in the classic style in front, but with a cropped back. Seen here with a wide leg trouser, I can see this shirt working for a night out. I would style it with heels and no jewelry at all - the shirt alone is enough of a statement.

Contrarian button downs retail from $265 to $300 and can be found in boutiques nationwide.

WesFeld Wins Gen Art Competition at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

Gen Art hosted a show during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week featuring a new team called WesFeld, two up and coming designers featured on Project Runway Season Five: Daniel Feld and Wesley Nault. The two teamed up shortly after filming wrapped on season five, and entered a Gen Art competition announced in October. After receiving a majority of the votes, they won with the collection presented here and won $10,000 to create and present their collection at the next Fashion Week.

Think you can't make fashion with plastics? Think again. From the press release:

WesFeld's winning designs are whimsical and romantic creations inspired by elements of water and nature. The pale pink evening dress features poly-organza, poly-taffeta and plastic boning to create a shape that resembles a conch sea shell with a pearl inside. The designer’s second look is a more structured and textured dove gray gown made of poly-organza, plastic woven interfacing and plastic boning, with poly-satin piping detail. This gown was inspired by a fossilized exoskeleton of an ancient sea creature and a seahorse's paneled body.

Project Runway Winner Irina Shabayeva's Fall/Winter 2010 Collection

Irina Shavayeva debuted her fall 2010 collection Saturday February 13, 2010 at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at SIR Stage 37.

I remember watching Project Runway and Irina was preparing for the final collection challenge. She had a t-shirt, I believe, with birds and NYC art on it. She's carrying that bird motif through again this season, although she's taken it to a completely different label.

Her collection included hand painted prints, pheasant feather dresses, and custom made aviator hats. Because the show was sponsored by Tupperware, she managed to even include that into her creations - providing a hard edge against which the soft cashmeres and painted silks could contrast.

NYFW: Daniel Vosovic Unveils First Complete Ready to Wear Collection

Project Runway alum Daniel Vosovic presented his first full ready to wear collection February 11 at Exit Art in New York City for Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.

Vosovic found his inspiration during a late night summer stroll through Washington Square Park in New York City. The designer developed the concept of his collection by observing the effects of time and the elements on various statues and sculptures and exploring the notion of creative destruction. Vosovic created completely original prints and embroideries derived from studying the aging process of oxidized copper, broken marble, and other materials in various stages of transformation.  The inspiration was communicated throughout the presentation space by dim ambient lights, models posed strongly on stark white pedestals, and a sweeping nature film projected on the walls made by young film makers Porter Panther (www.porterpanther.com). Through the use of tailored separates with digitally printed satins, richly colored suede, and flowing dresses, Vosovic was able to capture the essence of a quiet wide open park-like space filled with strong artistic silhouettes. Vosovic casted all Asian models to present his collection to the public as one cohesive form and add a striking consistency to the overall effect.

Nima Fall/Winter 2010 Collection

The Nima Fall and Winter Collection was held February 13, 2010 in SoHo. The stark loft space and black runway added drama to the clean lines and modern shapes of the clothing. See a video clip of the show on YouTube: Nima Fall/Winter 2010 Collection.

The big trend for Nima is the ruched leggings that covered a high heel almost completely.

The color palette was a modern mix of winter white, camel, and black, with pops of jewel tones thrown in, such as amethyst purple and cobalt blue. Hems were asymmetrical on both dresses and tops, and blazers were cut as a v-shape with no real lapel.

Accessories were minimal, a large floppy hat, silver bangles, zipper hardware. Blazers were styled with sleeves pushed up, and trousers were flared with a very low hem - brushing the floor even with three inch platform shoes.

We also saw raccoon and mink fur in the form of jackets, vests, and even a dress. Looks are listed below:
  1. Ivory double face wool pantsuit
  2. black denim and leather Hutton jacket - black latex wool jersey double zipper skirt
  3. Ivory double face wool Lauren coat dress
  4. pastel mink fest - camel double face wool ski pant
  5. Peacock silk/crystal print dress - black latex ribbed wool jersey cycle vest
  6. Camel silk tunic
  7. Black latex ribbed wool jersey dress with Finn raccoon hem
  8. Sapphire/crystal print dress - camel double face wool Hutton jacket
  9. Black denim dress with black latex ribbed wool jersey hem
  10. Ivory double face wool Hutton jacket - black mink dress
  11. Camel double face wool Vfront jacket - organza/chrome trimmed leather skirt
  12. Camel wool cowl neck dress with crystal print hem - lambskin cycle jacket
  13. Black denim pull through coat dress - ivory double face wool skirt
  14. Crystal print cocktail - camel doube face wool cycle jacket
  15. Black leather V front coat - latex wool jersey vest - denim ski pant
  16. Dark camel wool dress with black latex ribbed wool jersey hem
  17. Sapphire silk cocktail - Finn raccoon on organza coat
  18. Peacock silk cocktail with organza shoulder
  19. Sapphire silk asymmetrical gown
  20. Crystal print gown

Breaking News: Fashion Designer Alexander McQueen Found Dead

In some horribly shocking news, the Times Online is reporting that Alexander McQueen was found dead early this morning in his home in London. He was 40 years old, and it is apparently being considered a suicide.

Mr. McQueen was one of Britain's best known fashion designer, and he began his illustrious career as a tailor's apprentice on London's Saville Row, and went on to become the creative director for the label Givenchy. He left the label in 2001 to focus on his own label, Alexander McQueen.

One really can't talk about Alexander McQueen and not mention his friend and mentor, Isabella Blow, who encouraged him to begin his label and even bought his entire graduation collection. Ms. Blow committed suicide last year by drinking weedkiller.

McQueen was mourning the loss of his mother, who passed away two months ago, even going so far as to tell his Twitter fans that he was having a hard time getting past her death.

His vision and talent will be sorely missed.

Valentines Day: Do You Love You?

Since love is in the air with Valentines Day right around the corner, I thought this would be a perfect chance to talk about self-love.

That's right - self-love. And I'm not talking about the physical kind (although that is wonderful all in itself), I'm talking about loving yourself for who you are.

Why am I talking about this here? Because sometimes fashion brings up insecurity and doubts, when it should be inspiring us to bring more beauty into the world. Instead we see women who we perceive are thinner, better, richer, MORE than we are, and it is often times a reason why many turn away from fashion altogether. However, I'm proposing that we look at it differently - that we learn to love ourselves and use fashion as a way to express that love.

And in that spirit, I'm teaming up with Madly in Love with ME "Share the Love" campaign and Self Love Day on February 13. I'm posting my Self-Love Manifesta, and I'm hoping that you will share with me your manifesta too. In addition, I will be holding a contest that you can enter and win a gorgeous ME heart token necklace:

To enter the contest, simply download the ME-Love kit and leave me a comment telling me about the self-love dare or self-love vow (both are in the kit) you took and why.

In the meantime, here is my personal manifesta for Self Love Day:

I will respect, honor, and admire the woman I have worked hard to become and that which is still to be. I will not engage in self-defeating competition, self-loathing, or any form of self-hatred. I honor my mind, my body, and my spirit and joyously accept and love every part of me, even that which is not perfect.

Now, tell me yours.
